J.M. Coetzee, born in 1940 in Cape Town, South Africa, is a distinguished novelist and academic. He is a credible voice on themes of apartheid and human rights, drawing from his South African heritage. Coetzee's novel "Life & Times of Michael K" won the Booker Prize in 1983. He is also known for "Disgrace" and "Waiting for the Barbarians," both critically acclaimed works exploring complex social and ethical issues. Coetzee won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
