In the early stretches, the book’s historical texture is so specific you can feel the ground underfoot: the rhythms of village life, the legal shadows behind everyday disputes, and the way ambition gets interpreted as insolence. Gough also keeps returning to moral ambiguity as a practical problem, not a philosophical mood; characters don’t “learn lessons,” they weigh outcomes and live with the cost.

One thing I appreciated is how often The Yeoman Adventurer uses concrete encounters to show identity in motion.
