Walter Jackson Bate (1902–1993) was an American literary scholar and professor at Harvard University. He specialized in English Romanticism and became a leading authority on John Keats, using extensive historical research and careful textual analysis. Bate’s credibility rests on his long academic career and major scholarly contributions to Keats studies. He is best known for John Keats (1963). Other notable works include The Burden of the Past and the English Poet (1970) and Samuel Johnson (1977).
