W. S. Merwin (1927–2019) was an American poet, translator, and environmental writer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later studied at Harvard University. Merwin is credible on poetry and language because he published widely, won major literary awards, and wrote extensively on craft and the natural world. He is also known for other works such as The Rain in the Trees and The Folding Cliffs.
