Samuel Eliot Morison (1887–1976) was an American naval historian and professor at Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and World War II and worked as a naval intelligence officer, giving him direct familiarity with maritime operations and sources. Morison is credible on early modern naval history and exploration, including Christopher Columbus, because he combined archival research with naval expertise. His other notable works include Admiral of the Ocean Sea (1942) and The European Discovery of America (1971).
