Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist from Haworth, Yorkshire, born to Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell Brontë. She grew up in a literate, religious household and drew on her experiences teaching and living in the North of England. She is credible on the topic of 19th-century English social life and women’s education because she wrote from firsthand observation. Her notable works include Shirley (1849) and Villette (1853), as well as Jane Eyre (1847).
