Barbara W. Tuchman (1912–1989) was an American historian and writer. Born in New York City, she studied at Barnard College and worked as a journalist before publishing widely acclaimed historical scholarship. She was credible on World War I history through her rigorous use of primary sources and her focus on diplomatic and military decision-making. Her notable works include The Proud Tower (1966) and Stilwell and the American Experience in China (1971).
